About me

Originally from England, born of mixed Irish-Anglo parents, (my great grandfather is George Bernard Shaw on my father's side). I have lived in Tramore in County Waterford for over 25 years, married to a lovely Irishman.

I love living by the sea, I love life, I love animals and our natural world. I live with two rather mad-cap dogs, whom I sincerely love.

I trained as a Celebrant after many years of living as a Humanist. My desire to become a celebrant was born out of a desire for helping other people. I originally aimed to volunteer as a humanist chaplain, offering non-religious support to people and families in the hospital. I was persuaded by a fellow celebrant, however, she asked me to consider being a celebrant, where I could facilitate funerals and be supportive for the grieving families, as I knew how. She also felt my people skills, my joie de vivre and my love of drama would be well suited to facilitating other ceremonies, such as beautiful and joyous weddings and baby namings.

I qualified to be a Humanist Celebrant in April 2019, and to my immense pleasure, I have received incredibly generous feedback on my ability to facilitate a ceremony. Comments are often about how helpful I have been throughout the planning process, and how deeply meaningful, sincere, and loving their ceremony was. Guests often explain that they never expected a non-religious ceremony to be so personal and beautiful.

I think that is the nature of a Humanist wedding ceremony; it offers the freedom to put the relationship of the couple, and the relationship with their community, as the focus, culminating in the legal vows.

I also receive similar feedback when I facilitate a funeral. Without a doubt, I am always deeply moved and my central role is to facilitate while speaking the language of the departed person's loved ones when they speak of them and to support their grief and the love they wish to express.

I am also a counselling therapist accredited with IACP and I have worked with individuals and couples for twenty-five years, listening to their stories. Through my work, I have learned that every person has a story that deserves to be heard, and as a celebrant, I honour the story of your relationship and the vision for your day.

I know I will always feel this joy helping you on your special day, nothing makes me happier! When I think of how committed I still feel in my role as a counsellor after 25 years, I know I will continue to experience delighted and grateful when I am in the presence of the love, joy and authenticity of a couple when they are with their community on their wedding day. I do not imagine I shall ever have enough of being involved in love and joyous celebrations! Who could?

Lovingly,

Laura Walsh
